Get to know Itrana
Itrana is a native olive cultivar from Italy’s Lazio region, known for its medium-large, roundfruit that ripens late, usually between November and December. It produces a delicate, fruity oil with fresh herb and green tomato notes, prized for its smooth balance and low acidity. Grown for both oil and table olives, Itrana reflects the fertile, sun-kissed hills of the Latina province.
RECOMMENDATION
Excellent raw on salads, bruschetta and grilled meats.
Meet Lucia Iannotta:
In the limestone hills above Sonnino, where olive groves climb over stone terraces andthe air is heavy with the scent of the sea, you’ll find Lucia Iannotta walking among nearly 6,000 Itrana olive trees spread across 20 hectares. The Iannotta family has cared for these groves for generations, and today Lucia runs the farm together with her mother,Emilia.
Lucia learned everything from Emilia, who taught her everything she knows about life in the groves — the daily care of the trees, the small challenges and victories of each season, and how to face them together. Inspired by the strength of the women around her, Lucia has shaped the farm into a place where tradition and modern practices meet.
Almost every tree on the farm is of the Itrana variety, a native variety that is as demanding as it is distinctive.
The Itrana dislike flat land and don’t tolerate sudden changes in climate, but in these rugged, mineral-rich hills they thrive, producing olives with a character found nowhere else.
The groves are farmed with organic practices, a choice that reflects Lucia’s respect for the land and for future generations.
For Lucia, harvest season is the most exciting time of year. She prefers to start in early October, when the olives are still bright green and full of potential. The steep terrain makes mechanical harvesting impossible, so everything is done with hand combs or small pneumatic tools. Once gathered, the olives are milled on-site using modern equipment to create an oil that reflects the rugged landscape and the care that Lucia and her family pour into every step.
