Get to know the Roggianella

Roggianella is a traditional olive cultivar native to Calabria, particularly the areas around Roggiano, in the province of Cosenza. This cultivar is highly valued for its adaptability to the local environment and resistance to common olive pests and diseases. Roggianella trees are characterized by their medium-low vigor and open canopy, making them well-suited for the hilly terrains of Calabria. The olives are typically harvested in late October to early November.

RECOMMENDATION
Roggianella’s delicate, fruity notes make it perfect for drizzling over fresh salads, grilled vegetables, and light pasta dishes, adding a subtle yet memorable touch to every bite.

Meet the Serov Family

In the mountains of Calabria, just outside the town of Altomonte, the Serov family has made their home among centuries-old olive groves. Originally from the northern parts of the world, where olives—and even apples—barely grow, they never imagined one day they would be caring for trees with such deep roots in southern soil. What began as a leap of curiosity and a love for the sun soon became a way of life.
For the past twelve years, the family has tended their Roggianella olives, known locally as Tondina, on the hillsides where modern machinery can’t be used. Harvests are still done by hand, just as local farmers have done for generations. Once picked, the olives are pressed within hours ensuring that the freshness of the fruit is captured in every drop of oil.

Life here moves to the rhythm of the trees. Their house is surrounded by groves that frame each sunrise and sunset, and even the family dog, Misha, joins in the daily walks among the terraces. A hammock beneath one of the oldest trees has become a favorite place for a quiet espresso or an afternoon pause, small moments that remind them why they chose this land.

The Serovs are proud to share the flavors of their oil, vibrant and aromatic. More than just extra virgin olive oil, it represents a way of living closely with the land and continuing the story of Altomonte’s olives, one harvest at a time.
